One of the things I love at festivals is discovering new artists. The X Games Norway was no different. I can’t say I have a vast knowledge of the Norwegian music scene, apart from some metal bands, or mainstream stars such as Kygo or Alan Walker, so it wasn’t really a surprise I didn’t know any of the bands announced for this year’s edition. However, one of them especially stuck with me – the punk rock four-piece Sløtface.
Ever since the announcement, I was hoping their set won’t overlap with any of the contests I really wanted to see, and will all due respect to the skiers who rode the Eliminations, I was happy it was the case. At 2:30 pm sharp, we were in front of the stage, and the band was on it. Right from the start, the band showed I wasn’t wrong. Their melodic incarnation of punk rock and pop punk hits all the right places, while the band enjoys every minute on stage. They didn’t have an especially big crowd, but it didn’t hurt their performance one bit.
The energy was there, especially with singer Haley Shea, who at some moments, with her energy and appearance, reminded me of Guano Apes‘ Sandra Našić from the early era of the German band. The performance itself was super-short, so the band only had the time for a few songs. Understandably, they choose to fire up some of their biggest songs, including ‘Telepathetic’ and ‘Nancy Drew,’ as well as squeezing the brand new single ‘Stuff,’ released just a day before. Most importantly, the band had fun on stage, and as short as it was, their set was a joy to watch.
